STUDENTS ENHANCE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF ATOMIC ORBITALS

16-07-2021

"Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.”

Science is a logical, systematic understanding of things to enhance our knowledge. There are different branches of science, Chemistry is one, which enhances understanding of physical phenomena on the basis of theories and observations, and experiments. To boost the understanding of the concept of Atomic orbitals, their shape, and significance in Grade XI, an activity was conducted to learn about electronic configuration, the shape of orbitals, period number and group number, and probability density. Topic was to learn about the electronic configuration, shapes of orbitals and to find the period and group number. Students of grade XI enthusiastically participated in the activity and had written the electronic configuration of some of the elements, reduced their period and group number, drew the shapes of the orbitals (s,p,d orbitals), and learned the graph between probability density and radius. It was a wonderful experience for all of them.
